SYLVAN WAS out by eight o’clock. Nick gathered him up from where he’d collapsed on the living room sofa and carried him up to bed. Daniel saw Nick place a kiss on Sylvan’s temple before he took him up the stairs. A ridiculously sappy gush of feeling flooded his chest.

It had been a good day. Hell, Daniel had stood in front of a crowd of thousands at business conventions, playing the big shot, giving a speech in full Gordon Gekko mode. He’d sat at board tables winning million-dollar battles. He’d played golf in Palm Springs with the California governor and had stood on top of the Eiffel Tower at a private VIP event. But there was not a doubt in his mind that this had been the best day of his entire life.

He opened a cabinet door and looked at the selection of wines he’d had Gwen stock. Nick liked reds. A Pinot Noir perhaps. Frank was also in bed for the night, his nurse keeping watch in his room. Jenny was still out. The thought of he and Nick sharing a bottle of wine, maybe out on the deck, alone, had Daniel’s body tensing with anticipation. Would this be the right time to—?

He heard a creak from the stairs and then Nick was in the kitchen. He put a hand on Daniel’s back, peering over his shoulder into the cabinet. “Wine?” he asked, sounding like he was in favor of it.

Daniel froze, looking at him.

For a moment they just stood silently staring at each other. Then Nick licked his lips and glanced at the window. “Jenny should be back soon. They were supposed to be here by dark. Maybe I should call her.”

Out the kitchen window there was just a thread of gold visible over the water.

“I’m sure she’s fine.”

“Do you know what time the last ferry runs?” Nick took his cell phone from the back pocket of his shorts to check the time.

“Late. Eleven or twelve, I think.”

The exact time was destined to remain a mystery, because just then the front door opened and Jenny and Laurent came in.

At least, Daniel assumed it was Jenny with Laurent. In any rate, it was a girl who had Jenny’s basic face shape and smile.

Holy shit. Daniel felt Nick stiffen beside him.

“Well?” Jenny spun around. “What do you think?” She looked delighted—but nervous.

“Hnnng,” Nick said.

Jenny’s hair, which had previously been long and thick and honey blonde and, honestly, in Daniel’s opinion, like something on Housewives of Beverly Hills, had met with an army of Ginsu knives. The top of it was a spiky pompadour, sticking up and out in a gravity-defying manner. Long bangs, cut on a bias, covered her forehead and most of one eye. That top layer had been bleached to a white blonde. Underneath, a longer layer in black hung over Jenny’s shoulders and there was a touch of lavender on the bottom layer of her bangs, done in such a way that you saw the white blonde on top but the lavender framed her face like an underglow, softening it.
